‘From the moment you touch down in Tanzania, you know you’re in Africa, the real Africa. It’s an absolute pleasure to recommend this destination in the sure knowledge that travellers will have a trip of a lifetime.’ Luciano Carbajo.
A big part of what makes Tanzania so special is the scale of the place, it has a sense that things have been left untouched and that nature is free to rule as it has for millennia. This has been a conscious choice and an astounding 37% of its land has been left to conservation, this is almost 400,000 square km (155,000 square miles), This protected land is contained in national parks, game and forest reserves, famous for spectacular landscapes and herds of wildebeest and elephants.
Tanzania has the status of hosting the great Wildebeest Migration, one of the last mass terrestrial animal movements left on the planet – the herds are so big they can be seen from space! About 2 million wildebeest, zebra and antelope migrate around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing.
The peak ‘river-crossing season’ is from June to October and lodges that are well-located for this event get booked up long in advance. That being said, you are not limited to travel during this period, as periods when the herds give birth and are seen grazing across the plains is an equally tremendous sight.
Tanzania is known for many unique and unusual features, one of the most famous being Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain on Earth. This option is for the physically fit and prepared because climbing to the ‘Roof of Africa’ can take five or more days, some of which is at altitude.
Another amazing feature is The Ngorongoro Crater, which was formed around 2.5 million years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself. The Crater has formed an enclosed ecosystem and is the best (and most unique) place to see the Big 5.
There are few places on earth where one can so effortlessly combine a once-in-a-lifetime safari with a tropical island experience. Tanzania has a tantalizing choice of Indian Ocean paradises within easy reach. Zanzibar Island is the most visited and is made up of Pemba to the north, plus numerous smaller islands and islets. A compelling reason to go to Zanzibar is to explore Stone Town. The whitewashed, coral-rag houses, quaint shops, bazaars and mosques offer an intoxicating glimpse into it’s fascinating past.
Zanzibar is one of the world’s most romantic honeymoon destinations. If budget allows time on Mnemba Island, a private island, one will be the closest a human will get to paradise while on earth. Pemba Island is reputed to be among the world’s best diving sites, with a trip to Mafia Island between October and April offering the chance to swim with migrating whale sharks.
Tanzania is blessed with some of the wildest, most awe-inspiring places on the planet, it is little wonder that it is the most visited destinations in Africa!
