Four Seasons Great Exuma at Emerald Bay
Come visit the jewel of The Islands Of The Bahamas -- Nassau/Paradise Island. As the cultural, social,
political and economic center of The Bahamas, it is the most visited destination in the islands.
Nassau/Paradise Island has much to offer visitors. There are more sights and activities
here than you can experience in one trip. Pristine beaches, duty-free shopping, posh resorts, dazzling
casinos, exciting attractions, historical landmarks and water and land sports of every kind are all waiting
for you. And they're all just a "stone's throw" away from each other.
The area known as Nassau/Paradise Island includes two separate islands connected by two bridges.
Nassau, the capital city of The Islands Of The Bahamas, is located on the northeast shore of the island
of New Providence. Tiny Paradise Island is directly across the bridge from Nassau. Although
Nassau/Paradise Island accounts for less than two percent of the land area in The Islands Of The
Bahamas, it is the residence for 60 percent of Bahamians. Nassau is a sophisticated, charming old
town built on a sun-splashed hillside overlooking the sea. It was founded in 1670 and rapidly grew
as the center of commerce for the islands due to its protected harbor with fine anchorages.
Nassau/Paradise Island also includes the resort areas of Cable Beach and Paradise Island.
Suddenly, with the addition of luxurious hotels and a sparkling casino, it was transformed into
one of the most glamorous and celebrated resort centers in the world, combining exclusive tranquility
and lots of action.
After golfing or tennis or swimming, why not try some of the native cuisine of The Bahamas: Conch
fritters, grouper fingers, peas 'n' rice, boiled fish, johnnycake and guava duff are just a few of the tasty
dishes, all of which go just right with a tropical drink in your hand. From casinos, cabarets, magic acts
and acrobatics to moonlight dinner cruises and theatre performances, Nassau/Paradise Island offers
more options for night life than there are hours in the day to experience them all.
The Exumas are an archipelago of 365 cays and islands, beginning just 35 miles
southeast of Nassau and stretching over 100 miles. From the air, these cays
look like jeweled stepping stones surrounded by a shimmering emerald sea giving
this chain the distinction of being one of the prettiest in The Islands of
The Bahamas. The bright white sand of the deserted beaches is a striking contrast
to the aquamarine and jade hues of water. The topography doesn't vary much,
as the islands are only 7½ miles across at the widest point, but the
splendor of the pristine beaches, the crystal-blue waters and the lush tropical
greenery attract people from around the globe.
A tranquil atmosphere abides in these seemingly limitless cays, multi-colored
waters and quaint towns of amicable people who are eager to encounter visitors.
Most of The Exumas' 3,500 residents live on Great Exuma or Little Exuma,
the two largest islands, which are connected by a short bridge. They play
host to much of the commerce and tourism in the island chain.
The Abacos are a group of islands and cays forming a boomerang-shaped chain
which stretches nearly 130 miles from Walker's Cay in the north to Hole-In-The-Wall
in the south. It lies roughly 175 miles east of Palm Beach and 106 miles
north of Nassau. The area of Abaco is 650 square miles. The configuration
creates naturally protected waters referred to commonly as the Sea of Abaco
which makes a favorite cruising ground for yachtsmen, many of whom come from
great distances. Abaco is widely known as the Sailing Capital of the World
and a Sailor's Nirvana.
The five (5) inhabited cays of major importance are Walker's Cay, Green
Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Elbow Cay. Outlying cays include
Stranger's Cay and Umbrella Cay. Settlements on the main land extending north
to south include Crown Haven in the extreme north, Fox Town, Mount Hope,
Wood Cay, Cedar Harbour, Cooper's Town, Fire Road, Black Wood, Treasure Cay,
Murphy Town, Dundas Town, Marsh Harbour (The Capital), Little Harbor, Cherokee
Sound, Casuarina Point, Bahama Palm Shores, Crossing Rock and Sandy Point
on the southern tip. Due west of Sandy Point is tiny Moore's Island.
Sheltered harbors create a haven for yachtsmen. Colonial towns are gems
of New England architecture. And the ecosystem provides a rich outdoor experience
for nature lovers.
