Born July 11, 1944 on a farm in Essex; married to Lana nee Paton from Charleston, South Carolina, he has five daughters.
Peter de Savary is a well-known international businessman, who, since the age of 16, has applied his entrepreneurial skills in many areas, including the petroleum industry, shipping, shipyards, property, import/export and the club and hospitality industry among others. His activities over many years have spanned three continents.
He founded the world wide St. James Clubs (London, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, and Antigua, W.I.) and the Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, Scotland and Stapleford Park, England. In addition, he also founded Cherokee Plantation, South Carolina, Carnegie Abbey Club, Newport, Rhode Island, Bovey Castle, England and the Abaco Club, Bahamas. All of these successes have been highly acclaimed.
During his many years in business he has accumulated many awards: Tourism Personality of the Year; the England for Excellence Award sponsored by the English Tourist Board for Littlecote Park and Lands End, and the Come to Britain award in 1986. Other awards include numerous environmental, preservation and historical achievements as well as winning “Best golf resort in England” for Bovey Castle at the World Travel Awards 2005.
An experienced sailor, having participated in the Admirals Cup in 1981 and leading Great Britain for the America’s Cup challenge in 1983. He is also a keen horseman and hopes to find time to take up golf in the future having built seven championship links style courses.
A well-known philanthropist, he particularly helps underprivileged and handicapped children and is a patron and board member of the British Teenage Cancer Trust, a Governor of the Newport Health Care Corporation, and supports a number of other charities at each of his club destinations.
Peter de Savary is himself a member of various clubs including The Royal Thames Yacht Club, The Duke of Edinburgh Golf Society, The Lyford Cay Club, The Royal Burnham Yacht Club, The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and The New York Yacht Club.
